Growth & AI-Search Glossary
The growth, SEO, and AI-search terms every founder and marketer should know — defined in plain English.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
- Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring and strengthening content so it gets cited and surfaced by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. The term was coined in the KDD 2024 study "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," which found that adding citations, quotations, and statistics can raise a source's AI citation rate by up to 40%.

- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
- Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content to be selected as the direct answer by answer engines and voice assistants, such as featured snippets, AI Overviews, Siri, and Alexa. AEO prioritizes concise, factual, well-structured responses over ranking a page in a traditional list of ten blue links.

- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- Search Engine Optimization is the practice of improving a website's visibility in organic (unpaid) search results through technical, content, and authority signals. The goal of SEO is to earn qualified traffic by ranking higher for the keywords a target audience searches.

- LLM (Large Language Model)
- A Large Language Model is an AI system trained on vast text datasets to predict and generate human-like language, powering tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. LLMs underpin the AI answer engines that summarize and cite web content in response to user prompts.
- AI Overviews
- AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional search results, synthesizing an answer from multiple web sources with inline citation links. Launched in the U.S. in May 2024 and expanded to more than 100 countries by October 2024, they succeeded Google's earlier Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment.
- → SEO / GEO Visibility
- Schema markup / structured data
- Schema markup is standardized code, drawn from the Schema.org vocabulary, added to a web page to describe its content in a machine-readable way so search and AI engines can understand its entities, relationships, and context. Structured data can trigger rich results such as star ratings, FAQs, and product details in the SERP.

- Entity (SEO)
- An entity is a distinct, well-defined concept — a person, place, organization, product, or idea — that search and AI engines recognize and connect within a knowledge graph. Entity-based SEO builds clear, consistent associations so engines confidently attribute topics and expertise to a specific brand rather than to loosely matched keywords.
- → SEO / GEO Visibility
- Answer block
- An answer block is a short, self-contained passage — typically 40 to 70 words — engineered to directly answer a specific question so it can be lifted verbatim into a featured snippet or AI-generated answer. Effective answer blocks lead with the answer, avoid ambiguous pronouns, and make sense without surrounding context.
- Backlink
- A backlink is a hyperlink from one website to another, treated by search engines as a third-party signal of credibility and authority. Backlinks from relevant, trusted domains remain one of the strongest ranking factors and also increase the likelihood of being cited as a source by AI engines.
- → SEO / GEO Visibility
- SERP (Search Engine Results Page)
- A SERP is the page a search engine returns for a query, containing organic listings, paid ads, and features such as featured snippets, AI Overviews, image packs, and "People Also Ask" boxes. Modern SERPs increasingly answer queries directly on the page, reducing clicks through to individual websites.
- → CRM / ERP Systems
- CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization)
- Conversion Rate Optimization is the systematic process of increasing the percentage of visitors who complete a desired action — a purchase, sign-up, or lead-form submission — through testing and user-experience improvements. CRO grows revenue from existing traffic rather than by acquiring more of it.
- → Web Development
- CTR (Click-Through Rate)
- Click-Through Rate is the percentage of people who click a link, ad, or search listing after seeing it, calculated as clicks divided by impressions. CTR measures how compelling a headline, ad, or SERP snippet is at earning the click.
- → Web Development
- CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)
- Customer Acquisition Cost is the total sales and marketing spend required to win one new customer, calculated by dividing those costs by the number of customers acquired in a period. CAC is a core efficiency metric and is most meaningful when compared against customer lifetime value (LTV).
- → Paid Media
- LTV (Customer Lifetime Value)
- Customer Lifetime Value is the total net revenue a business expects to earn from a single customer over the entire relationship. LTV guides how much a company can profitably spend to acquire and retain customers, with a commonly cited healthy benchmark being an LTV-to-CAC ratio of roughly 3:1.
- → Paid Media
- CRM (Customer Relationship Management)
- Customer Relationship Management refers to the software and processes that centralize a company's interactions with prospects and customers across sales, marketing, and support. CRM platforms such as Salesforce and HubSpot store contact data, track deal pipelines, and automate follow-ups to improve retention and revenue.
- → CRM / ERP Systems
- ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)
- Enterprise Resource Planning is integrated software that manages a company's core operations — finance, inventory, supply chain, HR, and manufacturing — within a single shared system. ERP platforms such as SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics give organizations one source of truth across departments.
- → CRM / ERP Systems
- Marketing automation
- Marketing automation is the use of software to run repetitive marketing tasks — email sequences, lead scoring, audience segmentation, and campaign workflows — automatically and at scale. It nurtures leads with personalized, behavior-triggered messaging, freeing teams from manual, one-off sends.
- → Process Automation
- Retainer
- A retainer is an ongoing agreement in which a client pays an agency or consultant a recurring fee, usually monthly, for a defined scope of continuous work. Retainers suit long-horizon disciplines like SEO and content marketing, where compounding results require sustained effort rather than one-off projects.
- Zero-click search
- A zero-click search is a query answered directly on the results page — via a featured snippet, AI Overview, or knowledge panel — so the user never clicks through to a website. Zero-click searches make up a large and growing share of queries, raising the importance of being the cited source rather than merely a ranked link.
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation is an AI technique that fetches relevant documents from an external source at query time and feeds them to a language model, so answers are grounded in current, verifiable information rather than training data alone. RAG is the mechanism by which many AI answer engines pull in and cite live web content.
